I was at Wells House 1983-87 (I think!). Matron did indeed ring the bell to wake everyone up in the morning, but as prefects, you were also allowed to do this job. We used to take great pleasure in ringing the bell as loud as possible above your 'friends' head, to give them that nice gentle wake-up feeling, before going around the rest of the dorms. We must have then handed it to back matron so she could go and wake up the girls.
The lobby bell was still in use in my time, along with the crack, but we were allowed to ring it however we wanted and as hard as we wanted! I remember ringing it for meal times.
During early life I was known as Fido - so I use that as my internet identity where I can. I am a retired Local Government man who now enjoys a variety of interests. In these blogs I hope to share some of them with anyone with a shared sense of humour who may come across them. But they are mainly for my own interest as a reminder of some of the things I have done in my retirement.
This is one of them.

FANTASTIC school. Such a shame it closed down.
